Year 5 visit to Grinton Moor

Y5LJ recently visited Grinton Moor as part of the ‘Let’s Learn Moor’ project.  During the day, the children took part in many different workshops, learning about the land, its habitats, the animals that live there and people who work there.  The children enjoyed learning about birds that might be seen near the moors, fire control and prevention, predators and food chains.  They were able to watch a shepherdess shearing a sheep, and they learnt lots about the wool and products that can be made from it.  The children had the chance to experience what it would be like to volunteer for Swaledale Mountain Rescue.  They learnt about how they rescue people who are injured or stranded, and about the medical equipment the rescue team use.  Most of the children’s favourite part of the day was meeting some gun dogs and learning about how they are trained to retrieve.  A brilliant time was had by all!
