Rail Safety Workshop – March 2024
Rail Safe Friendly brings schools and the rail industry together to raise rail safety awareness among school-aged children in the UK. Facilitated by Learn Live, a virtual education platform, the programme is educating millions of young people on the dangers of trespassing on the railway.
We are proud to announce that the pupils at Firthmoor Primary School have achieved a Bronze level certificate for their participation in the programme. We did this by watching the rail safety broadcast in class and by signing up to the ‘Switched On Rail Safety’ website to receive rail safety updates from Network Rail.

A team of 19 children from Year 5 and 6 participated in the Darlington Sportshall Athletics Cluster event on Monday 20th November. At the event, each child competed in two individual field and two individual / team track events. Some of the events the children took part in were running relays, obstacle relays, standing long jump, javelin throw and a speed bounce test. During the whole event the team showed great team work and participated with a great deal of enthusiasm. While all the children gave 100%, Christopher did particularly well in the speed bounce competition and ….. and ….. ran very well in the 2 + 2 girls’ relay. Ath the end of the competition the results were announced and Firthmoor Primary scored enough points to come third and qualify for the Darlington Final. See you all on Wednesday 6th December for the final!
TAG Rugby (Girls) – October 2023
It was great to see a team of Year 5 and 6 girls competing in the Girls’ TAG Rugby competition at Blackwell Meadows this year. They may have started out a little nervously but after some quick coaching tips from Mr Woodward, they were ready to take on teams from around Darlington. There were 7 other schools in our group with matches lasting for 15 minutes each.
All the girls worked hard to keeping possession of the ball and aimed to score as many tries as possible. All the team demonstrated teamwork skills and Mia, Millie and Layla worked tirelessly against their opponents, scoring tries at different points throughout the competition. A special mention also goes to Mia, who worked exceptionally hard in the final game.
Well done girls, you are a credit to Firthmoor Primary School.
TAG Rugby (Boys) – October 2023
A small team of 10 Year 5 and 6 boys competed in a TAG Rugby competition at Blackwell Meadows. Schools were divided into three groups and we played games against Skerne Park, High Coniscliffe and Holy Family. All the boys on the team tried very hard to apply the rugby skills they had learnt in a competitive situation. The whole team worked well together and tried their best to beat the opposition. Christopher and Fabian did particularly well and were able to score several tries.
Well done Team Firthmoor.
Quidditch Smile Day – October 2023
Children in Year 5 and 6 were treated to a Quidditch Smile Day on 24th October. A ‘Smile Day’ encourages children to take part if different types of sporting activities, with the aim that it will make the children smile and encourage pupils to choose to lead an active lifestyle.
On our Quidditch Day, children were divided into four groups/ teams (just like they are in Harry Potter). Pupils work as a team to play two different quidditch type games.
All children were fully involved in the activity and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to learn a new type of game.

Dancing star – Autumn 2022
Lucas in Year 5 recently attended a dance competition outside of school and managed to win four different trophies. He performed a mix of lyrical and modern dances, winning trophies for both his solo and duet attempts. He managed to achieve 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th place in some of the different competitions. Well done, Lucas!
Hoopstarz – Autumn 2022
Recently, classes from Year 2 to Year 6 had a special PE day. Children had the chance to take part in a Hoopstarz lesson, where hoop coach Tracy taught children (and staff) how to hula hoop to music. Children were then taught a range of tricks they can do whilst hula hooping. Due to the beaming faces that exited the hall, I think the children of Firthmoor had a fantastic day.
Key Stage 2 Cross Country – September 2022
A team of 23 children from Y3 to Year 6 represented Firthmoor Primary School at the Darlington Cross Country Competition. To be chosen as a team member, children were invited to compete in cross country trials against other children in their year group, prior to the competition day.
There was a lot of excitement on the bus as the team made their way to the fields behind Eastbourne Sports Complex, and this enthusiasm continued throughout the whole competition.
Depending on the age of the child, they had to run between 1700m and 2300m. All the children were a credit to the school and gave 100% in their race. Miss True was so impressed by the children’s determination and positive attitude of all the children who took part. You were ALL fantastic.
There were many impressive runs throughout the afternoon of racing. However, a special mention should go to Covenant in Year 4 who positioned in the top ten and has won herself a place at the Tees Valley Cross Country Competition. Well done Covenant!
