At Firthmoor Primary School, we really enjoy our outdoor play and learning.
What is OPAL?
At Firthmoor Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality play opportunities for all of our children. We believe that play is a vital part of every child’s physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual development.
Some of the most treasured childhood memories are made through outdoor play — climbing, exploring and discovering the world around us. Through our approach to play, we aim to give our children those same opportunities to create lasting memories.
We are proud to be part of OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), which helps us enrich our playtimes. OPAL encourages children to use both natural and man-made resources to spark imagination, creativity and curiosity. By providing a wide range of materials and opportunities, children are able to explore, collaborate and enjoy meaningful play experiences every day.

Our approach to play brings many benefits for our children, including:
- Happier children who enjoy their time at school
- Pupils returning to class calm, settled and ready to learn
- A fully inclusive playtime where everyone can take part
- Opportunities for children to be creative and make their own choices
- The development of independence and resilience
- Improved social skills and teamwork
Most importantly, it ensures that playtimes are full of enjoyment and fun for all children.
