Firthmoor Primary School

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage at Firthmoor Primary School, where our Nursery and Reception classes provide a nurturing, stimulating and inclusive environment in which children feel safe, confident and excited to learn. We recognise the early years as a crucial stage in a child’s development, and our dedicated staff work closely with families to ensure every child receives the very best start to their learning journey. Our nursery offers flexible 15‑ and 30‑hour sessions for 3‑ and 4‑year‑olds, with both morning and afternoon options available. Each September, we welcome 45 children across two small Reception classes, allowing us to build strong, meaningful relationships with every child and their family. Through these close partnerships between home and school, we create a warm, supportive setting where every child can grow, learn and thrive.

Our EYFS Vision

In EYFS at Firthmoor, we aim to:

  • Foster a love of learning through curiosity, exploration and play
  • Celebrate each child’s uniqueness and support them to “be the best they can be”
  • Build strong relationships with parents and carers
  • Develop independence, resilience and confidence
  • Provide a rich, engaging curriculum that prepares children for future success

Our Learning Environment

Our EYFS setting is designed to be welcoming, inclusive and inspiring. Children enjoy:

  • Bright and well‑resourced indoor classrooms
  • A large outdoor learning space used daily in all seasons
  • Areas for role‑play, construction, creative arts, early maths, phonics and reading
  • Opportunities for hands-on exploration, investigation and problem-solving

We ensure that every child has access to high-quality play experiences that support both their wellbeing and academic development.

The EYFS Curriculum

Our curriculum follows the statutory EYFS Framework and focuses on seven key areas of learning:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Learning takes place through a balance of child‑initiated and adult‑led activities. We carefully observe children to plan meaningful next steps tailored to their interests and developmental needs.

Phonics and Early Reading

Children begin their phonics learning in Reception using a systematic, structured approach (Little Wandle Letters and Sounds). We focus on developing strong early reading habits, confidence in decoding, and a love of books. Storytime is a core part of the day, helping children build imagination, vocabulary and listening skills.

Working in Partnership With Parents

We believe children thrive when school and home work together. Parents are encouraged to:

  • Join us for stay‑and‑play sessions and workshops
  • Share home learning through photographs and observations
  • Celebrate progress together during regular meetings and reports

We welcome parents into our EYFS community and value their insights and contributions.

Supporting Every Child

Our team is experienced in supporting children with a range of needs. We ensure early identification and personalised support, and we work closely with families and specialists to ensure each child feels safe, valued and included.

Memorable Experiences

Throughout the year, children enjoy a wide range of special activities, including:

  • Outdoor learning days
  • Visits and visitors
  • Celebrations of festivals and cultures
  • Themed days and creative projects

These shared moments help our children to learn, grow and make happy memories.
