The Thrive Approach is a way of supporting the social and emotional needs of children and young people that’s grounded in both experience and research.

At its heart is a simple idea: behaviour is communication. When a child is struggling, their behaviour is often telling us something about what they need. Thrive helps us understand that and shows what to do next. It brings together learning from education, social work and psychotherapy to give a clear, practical way to make sense of behaviour and respond in ways that help support our pupils.

The Thrive Approach draws on four key areas. These give us a deeper understanding of children’s needs and how best we can support them.
  1. What is behaviour communicating?
  2. How does development unfold?
  3. What’s happening in the brain?
  4. How do we build safe, supportive relationships?
